"Homeschoolers are abuzz with discussion over the suggestion that Republicans may be introducing legislation to give a federal tax credit to homeschoolers. While nothing has been proposed to date, it is worthwhile to examine the pros and cons."
very interesting article on the pro's and cons of a federal tax cut for homeschoolers. i agree that i do not want to answer to the federal government in regards to my homeschooling.it was interesting to read that some state give a credit, but only on secular material....which it is hard to find secular curriculum/textbooks (i've looked).
Another very interesting article on the tax credit for homeschoolers debate.
"The New York Times put most homeschoolers into an undesirable, non-bid for fame. We’ve been profiled as a special interest group wanting something (money) from these “new Republicans.” I don’t know about many other homeschoolers, but I’d rather step out of this particular limelight of perceived hands held out. As an Illinois homeschooler, my husband and I have known we could use the Illinois Education Tax Credit for some years, but decided it wasn’t worth it for various reasons. We learned some time ago that our freedom is worth more than money."
this quote in the article caused some alarm for me (quote from a Rob Reich (essay), :
"Want a tax credit to home school? Accept a requirement to register your child as being home schooled and that the child take the same state tests as other public school students. Federal dollars come with strings attached, and these particular strings are in the best interests of children, anyway."i have NEVER known the federal government to have anyone's best interest in mind but their own!!
the more i read on this subject the more i say NO to tax breaks for homeschoolers. i am finding that it would become another way for the government to control my homeschooling/family life. i DO NOT need government's approval to raise my children or to educate them. just as with the proposed constitutional amendment for parental rights, i do not need the government to tell me what my rights are. THEY DO NOT GIVE ME MY RIGHTS....the government only takes them away. so in my mind.....if you want to give me my money back in the form of "tax breaks" why not just let me keep my money in the first place.
there is some much i could say on this subject, but i would like to get a discussion with other homeschoolers on the subject. (they want to make it so your children will have to take the standardized tests to be eligible for tax credits......and if your child doesn't do well on those test, they want to make it so that you HAVE to send your child to school. bye-bye choice, bye-bye freedom. ok that is just another part that infuriates me!)

Homeschoolers and Tax Breaks
any thoughts on federal tax credits for homeschoolers? would you feel different about the state giving homeschool tax credit?
I'm with the lady who commented, "Our federal government operates on the principle that what the government giveth, the government can taketh away. When they offer a “tax break,” they don’t see it as returning to us money that is already rightfully ours — they see it as funding and subsidizing us. They see it as us spending “their” money, which opens the door to *telling us* how to spend “their” money, or else."
ReplyDeletei definitely agree with you. if they give us something we have to give them control. that is something i do not want to do.
