pomegranates

 Pomegranates

The boys and i picked up a couple pomegranates while we were grocery shopping. I have never eaten a fresh one and had No idea how to cut into and eat it. Fortunately for us there was a website on the sticker that was stuck to one.

We cut the crown off of the pomegranate. look at the red juice, WOW!

then the pomegranate was cut into section, WOW even more juice!!

we rolled the juice sacs with our fingers into a bowl of water. the white stuff that holds the sacs floats and was easy to remove from the bowl.
Left over white stuff and peels (the peels we will be using as a dye in our next project).

here is a pomegranate and the juicy yummy fruit sacs! what a great snack! but be very careful, the juice is stainy!!

Pomegranates also have folklore!!!
From the Demeter/Persephone myth to being said to contain 613 seeds, which is the number of "mitzvot," or commandments that the Jews are to follow, they are found in the histroy and myth of many countries. Although native to Iran, pomegranates are found in the histories of China, the Mediterranean, Asia, Africa, Europe and North America.
